Abstract:Within the extant corpus of Sino-Nom literature, there is an interesting phenomenon tentatively called “duo-existence of scripts” - that is, the simultaneous occurrence of both Sinographs and Nom script within one text. This paper, from a philological perspective, explores this phenomenon, especially within primary educational materials. The author differentiates between three types of “coexisting scripts”: duo-linear, duo-connected, and duo-mixed. There is a different relationship between the Sinographic and Nom texts within each type. Based on the identification and analysis of those different relationships, this paper argues that Sinographs and Nom script in Vietnam were not mutually exclusive or contradictory - on the contrary, they coexisted and cooperated in various ways differing in content and form. Despite this, Sinographs usually occupied a central position within the text more often than Nom scripts - this signifies the diagraphia between Sinographs and Nom script in Vietnam’s classical texts.
